Facebook bid to win back Corbett kids

The second wife of the Co Limerick man Jason Corbett — was one of only two people questioned so far about his violent death — has taken to Facebook to try and win back her stepchildren.

Molly Martens sought custody of the children following the violent death of their father, Mr Corbett, in a domestic incident on August 2 in North Carolina. He received a fatal blow to the head.

Ms Martens and her father, a retired FBI agent, have been the only people questioned by police about his death.

Mr Corbett’s children, Jack, 10, and Sarah Corbett, 8, are now back in Ireland with relatives.

After the death of his first wife in 2006, Mr Corbett made a will in which he named his sister, Tracey Lynch, and her husband, David, as guardians of the children in the event of his death.

A family court hearing held in North Carolina ordered that the children be returned to Ireland with the Lynchs as they are Irish citizens and this would be in their best interest.

Ms Martens is seeking to appeal that decision to a higher court.

She has taken to posting scenes on Facebook with the children and reminiscing about how fun life was with them.

Ms Martens posted images of them celebrating her 30th birthday with her, stating she got to spend it with her favourite people, Jack and Sarah, whom she described as “my children”.

She asks the children if they remember the occasion and how they sang happy birthday to her. She adds: “Wherever you are, my love will find you.”

In another posting, Ms Martins reminisces about a trip to Dublin where they visited Dublin Castle, the leprechaun museum, Viking Museum, the Chocolateria, Christ Church, and Dublin Zoo.

“You were only three and five but you walked for miles and I was so proud,” she said. “You are both so sweet, so caring, and so good. You will always be the best thing in my life. I know you are being so brave and so strong. If you ever see this, know that I think about you every moment,” she said.

Meanwhile, Mr Corbett’s family have received what is described by one source as a “considerable” legal bill from the law firm who dealt with their legal battle to gain custody of his children.

Ms Lynch and her husband had to travel to North Carolina and contest a court application by Ms Martens, who married Mr Corbett after the death of his first wife, Margaret (Mags) Fitzpatrick.

It is believed the bill arrived at the Lynch’s home on Thursday — the day after Mr Corbett’s funeral in Limerick — which was attended by Jack and Sarah.

A fund called ‘Jason’s Journey’, set up to help the family’s huge expenses, has raised over €25,000 to date.

Some of the money was spent on hotel and travel bills for the Lynchs during their stay in North Carolina as the court custody case continued.
