Rose of Tralee: Shane has the right stuff to be Escort of Year
The Traleeman won the title at this year’s Rose of Tralee festival, fending off stiff competition to take home a silver-plated canteen of cutlery, a Newbridge jewellery collection with Rose of Tralee cufflinks, a bracelet, watch, leather belt, wallet and cheque for €1,000.
The prize, worth almost €5,000 overall, was presented by Martin Kilduff of Newbridge Silverware, the main sponsors of the festival.
“I’m completely chuffed, humbled, delight to be representing Kerry and to get this award has just topped off what has been just another fantastic Rose of Tralee. I was escorting the Galway Rose, the Louth Rose and also the Meath Rose as well.
“All the girls have been fantastic and, as I said, they’re a complete credit to all their families and friends and centres,” he said.
The 23-year-old architect said he had been having a “fantastic” few days at the Rose of Tralee International Festival and really bonded with his fellow escorts when they attended boot camp.
“We were down in Kenmare and we had rigorous boot camps between shearing sheep and building stone walls and footing turf so we got a good round of experience, everything that needs to be done to be a good escort!
“It’s been a fantastic experience with all the lads, made great friends for life and really looking forward to enjoying the next few days,” he said.
A native of Tralee, Shane plays football for his local club Churchill GAA and occasionally writes for sports website Pundit Arena. Quiz buff Shane has also completed the Ring of Kerry Cycle and two Toughathlons, raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society in the process.
