Irish competitors won four gold, one silver, and two bronze, taking the tally so far to 22 medals for the 88 Irish athletes.

Rachel Ryan, aged 26, from Templemore, Co Tipperary, claimed Ireland’s first medal for a track event, winning gold in the 400m at Loker Stadium.

“I’m very happy and excited,” she said. “I didn’t think I was going to come first, but I guess when you don’t think a thing it ends up happening.”

James Meenan, aged 20, from Dundalk, Co Louth, followed Rachel’s success with a bronze medal in the 200m.

Meanwhile, Team Ireland enjoyed a hugely successful day at the LA Equestrian Center, taking a total of four medals.

Dearbhail Savage, 15, from Mowhan, Co Armagh, and Elizabeth Mair, 37, from Rathfarnham, Co Dublin, both took gold medals in their events, while Thomas Connolly from Coolaney, Co Sligo, took silver and John Deevy, from Kilmeadan, Co Waterford, claimed bronze.

Caroline Brennan, head equestrian coach, said: “I feel very proud of the whole team; they’re riding strange horses and competing in great heat. The athletes should all be exceptionally proud of their achievements here. Their families are so happy and there were plenty of tears of joy.”

Tying up a fantastic day for Team Ireland, Frances Power, 52, from Navan, Co Meath, put in a huge performance to win gold in singles table tennis.

Team Ireland have taken eight gold, four silver, and 10 bronze medals in the 2015 Games, as well as setting a number of personal bests.

Sport Minister Michael Ring congratulated the athletes and wished them luck in the remaining events.

“Winning a medal for your country at a World Games is a tremendous achievement,” he said. “I am sure their family, friends, and supporters are delighted and I want to add my voice to all those who are wishing them well.”
