Cork’s ‘Pink swingers’ launch charity event to drive balls in every single county

Three major golf enthusiasts from Cork are urging the public to get into the swing of their latest drive — the trio are raising money for charity by attempting to play a hole of golf in every county in Ireland… in less than 48 hours.

Over the course of two days, the self-titled “Pink Swingers” will travel the length and breadth of the country, spending less than half an hour on each green before travelling to the next one.

They will be driving a pink Renault supplied by Keary’s garage and will be dressed head to toe in pink thanks to Dwyer & Co. The Irish Examiner is sponsoring the event as media partner.

The fundraising event by friends Michael Sheehan, DJ Geaney and Eoin Landers is in memory of DJ’s mother Nora with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Ireland.

After a lengthy battle with breast cancer, Nora passed away in 2011. She had been a keen golfer and was heavily involved in Castleisland Golf Club. Her son, along with his two friends, now wants to do something positive in her name.

“We are delighted to be able to raise funds for such a worthy charity as Breast Cancer Ireland. This initiative has touched one of us personally and we wanted to do something to help fundraise. Hopefully people will support us en route around the country and donate,” said Michael.

The trio estimate 21 minutes on each hole will see them complete the challenge, providing they sleep for only three hours out of the 40 allocated.

To make up for this they plan to load up on carbs — together they intend to go through 90 bottles of Lucozade, 72 Mars bars and 30 sandwiches.

“We have 21 minutes per golf hole, not including food or fuel stops or traffic delays,” said Michael. “From start to finish we’re estimating it will take about 40 hours, which includes the three hours sleep we will get the night of the 19th in Lisburn.”

  • Swing4Cancer takes place on June 19 and 20. For more information follow @swing4cancer on Twitter. To donate go to www.idonate.ie/swing4cancer. Everyone who donates through this link will be entered in a draw to win a two-night stay at the Castlemartyr resort.
