A doctor facing allegations relating to poor professional performance yesterday told a Medical Council inquiry that he provided adequate care to an infant, who was born under traumatic circumstances and now suffers from cerebral palsy.

Dr Mohammad Ilyas Khan said that he and his team at South Tipperary General Hospital were delighted because they had brought the baby back from the brink of death after his birth on June 15, 2012. He also defended the treatment plan put in place regarding care of the baby.

The inquiry heard that Dr Khan had worked in various paediatric roles in South Tipperary General Hospital since 2000. On the night of BT’s birth, Dr Khan was working as a locum consultant paediatrician.
