Gardaí have urged the mother of a newborn baby abandoned in west Dublin to seek “immediate medical treatment”.

The baby girl was found wrapped in plastic outside a business premises in Rathcoole village.

Gardaí received a phone call at 3.30pm and immediately went to the scene, joined there by ambulance crews.

The baby was brought to Tallaght Hospital, where she was described by sources as being in a “good condition”.

Officers are concerned for the health and welfare of the mother and are asking her to seek medical attention.

They also want her to contact them as they are anxious to reunite her with her baby.

Gardaí are keen to assure the mother that they are not conducting a criminal investigation and that their overriding concern is for her health and safety.

They will try to locate and gather any CCTV footage in the area that could help identify her or anyone else involved.

Local district officer Superintendent Brendan Connolly of Clondalkin station said: “Gardaí are concerned for the welfare of the mother of this child and are appealing for her to seek immediate medical treatment and to contact gardaí who are anxious to reunite her with her baby.”
