Murder probe launched after man found dead in house following row

Gardaí are satisfied that the victim - originally from Lithuania - suffered a violent death after a row broke out in a rented property off Wolfe Tone Street in the early hours of the morning.

A housemate of the deceased was arrested at the scene and is being questioned by gardaí at Roxboro Garda Station.

It is understood the victim who was found in an upstairs room, suffered multiple injuries, possibly inflicted with a knife.

Gardaí made the grim discovery shortly after 5.30am when they were called to the terraced house following reports of a disturbance at the rented property located on Barrack Hill off Wolfe Tone Street.

It is believed the men had been drinking into the early hours of the morning when a dispute broke out.

The deputy State pathologist Dr Michael Curtis is conducting a postmortem examination at University Hospital Limerick on the body of the 39-year-old who has not yet been named.

A large Garda cordon remains around the house, while two other premises on St Patrick’s Road and Allandale are also being preserved as part of the investigation.

A 55-year-old man, also from eastern Europe, who had been living at the same address, was arrested at the scene at 9.30am. He is being detained at Roxboro Road Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, which means he can be held for 24 hours.

Locals in the tight-knit community were shocked to learn about the killing.

One local resident described her shock at the discovery. “It’s a residential area and it’s very quiet. There’s never really anything like that around here.”

Another woman said: “We’re shocked, I’m awake since seven, we heard all the commotion on the street and just wondering what had happened.”
