Five die in separate road crashes during weekend

Meanwhile, a man who suffered head injuries in a crash last month has died.

In the most recent fatality, a male pedestrian was hit by a car at Tuiterath in Balrath, Co Meath, on the N2 Dublin- to-Derry road at around 1.30am yesterday. The man, in his mid-fifties, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was transported to Navan General Hospital, where an autopsy was to be conducted.

The crash resulted in the N2 being closed yesterday between Curtis’ Cross and Rathdrinagh Cross to allow Garda forensic investigators to examine the scene, with traffic diverted for a time.

On Saturday night, a man, named locally as Joseph Mullany of Creegs in Balla, Co Mayo, was killed when the car he was driving hit a fence on the N5 at Knockanour, near Castlebar. Mr Mullany, aged in his early 30s and the sole occupant of the car, was rushed by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital, where he died.

Elsewhere, Keith Davis, 21, whose car left the road and hit a ditch at Ballyhard near Glenamaddy in Co Galway on March 29, died on Saturday. He had been transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

Two of the three crashes in Tyrone occurred near Cookstown. In the first, 23-year-old pedestrian Jane Burnside was hit by a vehicle on the Gortagammon Road, Tullyhogue, just before 1am on Saturday. At around 2.30am yesterday, a woman in her 50s died in a single vehicle crash on the Moneymore Road.

Meanwhile, a man was arrested after a crash claimed the life of a man in his 40s near Strabane on Saturday.
