Venessa Siatka, aged two, suffered fatal head injuries after she was struck by a car as she was walking on the path with her mother at around 6.30pm.

Senior officers hope to be in a position to send a file to the DPP shortly after they have completed interviewing witnesses.

They are also awaiting test results from samples taken from the 24-year-old driver who was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Detectives have already secured admissions from the man, from nearby Cabra, regarding the incident.

The DPP made a decision not to direct charges on Tuesday night and instead requested gardaí to prepare a full file for consideration.

The man is known to gardaí for public order and drug crimes.

Meanwhile, gardaí investigating a violent drug fracas at a Luas stop on Sunday night said one of the original aggressors was in a serious, but stable condition after undergoing brain surgery.

The man sustained severe injuries after being kicked in the head during what gardaí said was “an ongoing row over drug territory”. This man, along with an accomplice, had attacked three members of a rival gang with knives. The rival gang retaliated and inflicted a number of blows, including kicks to the head of one of them.

But one of the three suffered a serious slash wound, that required up to 32 stitches.

The man who suffered head injuries was sent to the head specialist centre at Beaumont Hospital where surgeons removed a blood clot on his brain.
