Project says it’s cool to be kind

This weekend, people are taking to the streets of Limerick, spreading happiness with every good deed they do as part of a Festival of Kindness.

Project says it’s cool to be kind

Organised by Pay it Forward Limerick, a team of local volunteers and businesspeople, the initiative seeks to boost spirits by holding free activities, encouraging people to pay the kindness forward and creating a ripple effect of goodwill.

“The idea has really taken off; so many people are contacting us wanting to get involved,” said festival spokesman Michael O’Mahony.

“We’ve no money, not one penny to spend. It’s all going on the kindness of people.”

As part of the festival, a free family fun day takes place today on Bedford Row from 11pm to 3pm. Children will be able to get their faces painted, enjoy free arts and crafts, and interact with lambs and puppies in the baby animal corner.

Free massages from qualified physical therapists will also be on offer. Adults of all ages and stress levels can take some time out in the designated chill-out zone.

Tomorrow, a Walking on Water Day takes place in the University of Limerick, offering free kayaking and a universal access excursion for wheelchair users and the visually impaired, while Monday sees random acts of kindness from more than 400 local scouts. Other highlights include a Get to Know your Neighbour Day and free stress management workshops for local businesses.

A similar event takes place in Cork later this month as Fermoy Friendship Week asks locals to carry out random acts of kindness, and be more conscious of other people’s feelings.

Fermoy’s Friendship Week takes place from March 23 to 27 while Limerick’s Festival of Kindness runs until Tuesday 17. See www.payitforwardlimerick.com .
