Taoiseach Enda Kenny has been accused of talking “clap-trap” after criticising the way some banks deal with people in mortgage arrears.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin made the charge, saying the Taoiseach was not doing enough to ease mortgage misery and had failed to stand-up to the banks on behalf of ordinary people.

Mr Martin said the fact two-thirds of people in arrears were working indicated banks were being too harsh on those in debt and not cutting effective deals with them.
