Six Nations boost for the country’s coffers
As Les Bleus arrive in their droves for what promises to be an epic showdown Six Nations, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce has revealed rugby fans travelling to Dublin for the two home encounters will likely generate more than €40m for the national economy.
This weekend’s encounter against France and the game against England on March 1 are sellouts, with 55,000 fans due to attend each match.
According to Chamber CEO Gina Quinn, the influx of visitors provides a huge boost to the city.
“As well as those attending the game, pubs and restaurants in the city will be packed with people watching the game and spending money,” said Ms Quinn.
“The Six Nations provides Dublin with the chance to demonstrate that it is a top destination for international sports events, which is particularly important given Ireland has submitted a bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup.”
A study by RBS estimated that the Six Nations generates 200 year-long jobs in Dublin and 400 jobs across the rest of the country.
Tourism Ireland CEO Niall Gibbons said the tournament offers a major boost for tourism in the off-season.
“Events like this provide Tourism Ireland with a unique opportunity to highlight the island of Ireland as a wonderful holiday destination as well as a top location for sporting events,” said Mr Gibbons.
