Addressing the 80 members of the public who attended the meeting in the Silver Springs Hotel, Lucinda Creighton TD said that SMEs are being discriminated against in terms of their tax burden and do not receive the same level of incentives that are afforded to Foreign Direct Investment.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, economist Eddie Hobbs said that he had yet to decide if he would run for the new party. “I describe myself as being at the front door of the party, welcoming in new members with one hand, with a baseball bat in my other hand for the old political stock who think that they can come and join this party now as a kind of flag of convenience,” he said.

The public meeting capped Ms Creighton and Mr Hobb’s tour of Cork yesterday. They visited Cork Airport and the Simon Community before they called to businesses in Little Island .

Common themes emerged — access to capital, the demands of regulation, and the cost of employers’ PRSI are frequent bugbears.

At Gate Childcare, manager Siobhan Browne explained how more support is needed for working parents, given the cost of childcare due largely to the regulatory requirements and the need for qualified staff. Management at Wisetek, a reverse logistics IT company, expressed their concern for the next government’s taxation policy’s and their disappointment at the current lack of political reform.

At the Delicious Gluten Free Bakery, owner Denise O’Callaghan explained that the company was ready to expand, but that investment is hard to come by.

The Cork meeting was the first of nine planned meetings to be held across the country .
