Government parties were quick to crow about the €37.8m granted to repairing secondary roads in Cork this year, but forgot to mention it was down on the amount handed out in 2014.

Despite the deteriorating state of many roads in Ireland’s largest county, it looks as though the situation will get even worse due to a number of factors. Last year, the council was given €39.65m by the Department of Transport, €1.8m more than this year.

What will further fuel motorists’ anger is that on top of their car tax, €5.6m of the local property tax collected locally has been used to prop up the 2015 allocation.
