Half of all septic tanks failed their inspections in 2014

Almost half of all septic tanks checked by local authorities last year failed the inspection, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The figure was included in the EPA’s Year In Review, which also revealed that there are still 121 ‘at risk’ drinking water supplies around the country.

Regarding septic tanks, the EPA said: “Local Authorities carried out 987 septic tank inspections in the first year of the EPA’s National Inspection Plan for Domestic Waste Water Treatment Systems. The national compliance rate for year-one inspections was 52%.”
