Racing legend sets pace as cyclists begin four-day Tour de Munster

The cycling legend is an avid supporter of the charity Down Syndrome Ireland which benefits from the Tour de Munster cycle.

Tipperary-born Kelly will remain with the cyclists in a demanding 640km challenge which ends on Sunday in Cork —on the city’s iconic Patrick’s Hill.

Waterford mayor Cllr Lola O’Sullivan yesterday wished all the cyclists well on their journey in what is the 14th year of event.

Down Syndrome Ireland chief executive Pat Clarke said: “Each year the Tour de Munster grows stronger and we are delighted to be the beneficiary for the fifth year in a row. The difference and change that the funds make to the lives of those with Down syndrome is incredible and I’d like to thank each and every one of the cyclists and supporters for their efforts.

“The generosity of the cyclists and their dedication to Down Syndrome Ireland never ceases to amaze me.”

Event organiser Paul Sheridan said the commitment from cyclists was not just for four days, but for months beforehand.

“Seeing all the friendly faces and receiving such a fantastic welcome from all corners of the province make the sacrifice so worthwhile,” he said.
