Man ‘caught red-handed’ with heroin
Brian Philpott, aged 33, of 6 Hollywood Estate, Blarney Rd, Cork, was arrested by Detective Garda Alan Johnston and brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court yesterday evening.
Philpott was charged with possession of diamorphine (better known as heroin) and having the illegal drug for the purpose of sale or supply.
The alleged offences relate to Wednesday July 23 at the grounds of a derelict portion of the old Our Lady’s Hospital, Shanakiel, Cork.
Det Garda Johnston objected to bail being granted to Philpott on the basis that he was allegedly caught red-handed and the allegation that he would become involved in the sale or supply of heroin if granted bail.
Eddie Burke, solicitor, was appointed on free legal aid to represent Mr Philpott. He said the accused would plead not guilty.
Inspector Pat Meaney said the total value of the drugs seized amounted to €10,600.
Mr Philpott testified yesterday at Cork District Court that he was out walking his dog in the area at the time. He noticed loose bags around the area and picked up a number of them. He said that as soon as he picked up one of the bags and held it up to see what was in it, officers of An Garda Síochána emerged and arrested him.
Mr Philpott said he would be pleading not guilty to the charges.
Judge Olann Kelleher refused the bail application and remanded Mr Philpott in custody until July 29.
