A 29-year-old Corkman charged with discharging a firearm, arising out of an investigation into a young woman being shot in the neck 10 days ago, yesterday said he was seeking bail.

A ‘Good Samaritan’ who stopped to assist a man on the side of the road could not have known that he was on bail for armed robbery and high on drugs — he responded to the woman’s offer of help by pulling out a screwdriver and hijacking her car.

Gardaí arrested a man they described as being caught red-handed with over €10,000 worth of heroin on the grounds of a derelict hospital in Cork, but he claimed that he picked up the bag by chance while out walking his dog.
