Body found in bog

Christopher Harney, 22, from Bealnamulla, Athlone, Co Westmeath, was last seen in Cork City on the morning of July 16. He is understood to have been attending a music event with friends the previous weekend.

It is understood that he had made contact with his family in a disorientated state and was unaware of his whereabouts.

His family raised the alarm and the call was traced to the Templemore area.

Following a week of searches involving local volunteers and Templemore gardaí, the young man’s body was recovered by the Garda underwater unit in a stream near Templetuohy bog on Tuesday night.

A postmortem was carried out yesterday afternoon at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Gardaí say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

In a statement yesterday, the Harney family thanked the Gardaí and the public for all their help.

The 22-year old’s parents spent the days since Christopher went missing appealing to the public for information and handing out leaflets and posters to raise public awareness in nearby towns.
