McIlroy, 25, won his third major championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, winning by two strokes from Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia to complete the third leg of a career Grand Slam of majors.
Having won the US Open in 2011 and the PGA Championship a year later, all that remains for McIlroy to join golfing greats Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods is to complete the set by winning the Masters.
Yet there were some unusual moments along the way as McIlroy pinpointed and then had removed from the course a spectator at the 16th tee who had been baiting him throughout his final round.
All was well until he attempted to thank the spectators for their generosity and support throughout the tournament. Alas, this being a stone’s throw from Anfield, home of Liverpool FC, he made the mistake of saying: “Even though I’m a Man United fan standing here...” which was met by a chorus of booing.
