Rory wins mother of all trophies

New Open champion Rory McIlroy had the last laugh in Hoylake last night as he saw off his rivals, a heckler, and the good-natured booers who turned on the Manchester United fan during his victory speech.

McIlroy, 25, won his third major championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, winning by two strokes from Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia to complete the third leg of a career Grand Slam of majors.

Having won the US Open in 2011 and the PGA Championship a year later, all that remains for McIlroy to join golfing greats Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods is to complete the set by winning the Masters.
