Some of the world’s top athletes, who use the meet as preparation for the Commonwealth Games which take place in Glasgow later in the month, will compete at Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) from 5.30pm.

Among the stars are world race walking champion Robert Heffernan. In his first race on home soil since winning the 50km walk at the World Championships in Moscow last August, he will be targeting the World Masters 3km race walk record which he set at last year’s meet.

Olympic gold winner Mark Lewis-Francis will feature in the 100m sprint alongside 9.95-second Cayman Island speedster Keymar Hyman.

And 4x400m US sprinter Maneto Mitchell is racing in Cork for the first time since 2012 in the hope of running a sub 45-second 400m.

And for the first time, the races at Cork will be streamed free and online to a global audience.

In recent years, the city council — which supports the meet — has developed live streaming of major civic events such as the St Patrick’s Day festival, the local election counts, and most recently the Eucharistic Procession, on its website.

This year, the City Sports organisers commissioned AerTV, an Irish online streaming service, to cover the event.

The event begins at the CIT Athletics Stadium in Bishopstown at 5.30pm tonight.
