Man shoplifted cans of tuna as he handed in CV
Adrian Lies, aged 24, did succeed in getting called back for an interview at Dunnes Stores in Carrigaline, Co Cork. But unfortunately for him, the interview was conducted by Garda Philip Moore in relation to the theft of the canned food.
Security staff observed the shoplifting taking place moments after Lies had handed in his CV with all his contact details on it.
Gardaí were alerted and Garda Moore arrived and arrested the young man at the scene.
Lies admitted yesterday at Cork District Court that he carried out the theft on the April 15 last.
Defence solicitor, Eddie Burke, said the Polish man had worked in Ireland for two-and-a-half years but was out of work throughout this year and things had fallen down for him.
Now living at St Vincent’s hostel, the items were basic necessities, he said.
As he had no previous theft convictions, Judge Leo Malone gave him the benefit of a dismissal under the Probation of Offenders Act.
However, the judge convicted and fined Lies on public order charges arising out of an incident on May 31. Inspector Joe O’Connor said Lies was drunk and a source of danger and was also verbally and physically abusive and had to be restrained by gardaí at Grand Parade, Cork, and taken to Bridewell Garda Station.
He was fined €300 for the counts of drunkenness and being threatening.
