Sinead O’Connor glams up image for boss album
O’Connor, 47, wears a black wig, bejewelled PVC dress, and is holding a guitar for her vampy new look.
She first had a different title in mind for her 10th album, and thought it was too late to rename it after she became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign, which discourages the word ‘bossy’ when describing successful women.
“Originally I had a different title, The Vishnu Room, but a few months back when I saw the phrase ‘I’m not bossy, I’m the boss’ and became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign, I wished I could rename the album, since indeed it can be tricky being a female boss and I think [Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg’s] campaign is a terribly important one,” O’Connor wrote.
“At the stage I became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign, it was too late to change the album title because the sleeve was already in print. But last week when the record company received the promo shots, which included the cover shot you now see, they asked could they change the planned cover to the current one, and that allowed me the opportunity of changing the title.”
O’Connor said she was a “very happy girl” following the change: “Thank you to all at Nettwerk Music Group and to photographer Donal Moloney for making the title change possible.”
The album will be released on August 12, when O’Connor performs at London’s Roundhouse.
The Ban Bossy campaign is also being backed by Beyonce.
Last October, O’Connor wrote an open letter to Miley Cyrus criticising the US star’s sexually liberated image and warned that she was being exploited by the music industry.
Cyrus had said her look was based on a younger O’Connor.
“The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company was encouraging me to do what you have done,” O’Connor wrote in an open letter to Cyrus.
“I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not on my looks.”
