A 60-year old man died following an altercation at an election party in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The incident happened at Crowe’s Bar in Galway City.

A 52-year old man from Galway city was last night being questioned by gardaí at Mill Street station in the city centre.

Gardaí issued an appeal to anyone in the Bohermore area or in Crowe’s Bar on Sunday night or Monday morning to contact them if they had any information.

The deceased was named yesterday as Liam Horan from Walter Macken Place in Mervue. He died, it is believed after suffering a heart attack following the incident between 2am and 3am. The bar is the family business of the Crowe family, two of whom, Ollie and Michael were re-elected as Fianna Fáil members to Galway City Council.

Liam Horan was the brother of unsuccessful Independent local election candidate Jimmy Horan.

The deceased man was rushed to University Hospital Galway with a suspected heart attack, where he died at 6.50am yesterday morning.

Galway Gardaí confirmed that a 52-year-old Galway man presented himself at Mill Street Garda station yesterday morning.

The State Pathologist, Marie Cassidy, carried out a post-mortem examination on Mr Horan at UHG yesterday afternoon.
