Fearghal Ó Snodaigh, the son of Dublin South Central representative Aengus Ó Snodaigh, suffered serious injuries in the early hours of yesterday morning in an incident which is under Garda investigation.

The son of the Sinn Féin social protection spokesman and party whip was attacked at approximately 12.30am by another teenager, who is well known to him. He suffered significant knife wounds to his upper arm.

The 18-year-old called 999 himself and an ambulance crew rushed him to St James’s Hospital.

He is understood to be in a serious but stable condition, and is expected to remain under observation for at least another 24 hours.

Mr Ó Snodaigh and his wife, who have three children, were not at home when the incident occurred.

Gardaí in Kilmainham have opened an investigation into the attack and are asking anyone with information to contact them immediately on 01-666-9700 or the Garda confidential line 1800-666-111.

However, while it is believed that gardaí know the identity of the main suspect, the whereabouts of this individual are currently unknown.

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams said his thoughts went out to his party colleague’s family.

“This is a shocking time for the family. We wish young Fearghal well and we wish the family well.

“People who don’t share our politics will be at one with us when we say that everybody hopes the young fella pulls through and gets better as quickly as possible,” he added.

Mr Ó Snodaigh has been a TD for Dublin South Central since 2002, having previously failed to win a seat in 1987 and during a by-election in 1999.
