Passion 2014 involved a cast of more than 30 local people, aided by another 40-strong support team from the parish of Nicker.

A major stewarding operation had to be put in place and shuttle buses brought people to the main scene at Nicker Hill.

Scenes from the Garden of Gethsemane were recalled on the lawn of the parochial home of parish priest Fr Pat Byrnes on Thursday night, and then moved to other locations through the night. The audience grew to more than 500 before dawn.

The crucifixion itself was re-enacted on Nicker Hill, where more than 5,000 of the faithful gathered.

Rehearsals, under local drama producer Eamonn Harty, started back in August.

Costumes were brought in from a theatrical company in the US and the male actors grew beards and long hair during the months of rehearsals.

Local tyre company owner Garry Fraher played Jesus.

Garry, a 32-year-old father of four said: “It was a massive production and Eamonn Harty has been brilliant. He is a very accomplished and award-winning producer. It was a long Holy Thursday as we were out overnight at the Grotto.”

The Good Friday event commenced with scenes of Pontius Pilate.

Jenny Mulcahy, who works at St Anthony’s nursing home in Pallasgreen, played Mary.

Jenny, a married mother of two, said: “It has been very tough, but it’s all worthwhile. We’ve been on an emotional roller coaster since the rehearsals got under way last August.

“We used to rehearse four nights a week, and for the past two months we have been rehearsing six and seven nights a week. It has taken over my life. It has been a great challenge and we are all delighted at how this very ambitious production has worked out. And Eamonn Harty has been amazing.”

Money raised will go to various charities and Garry and the other male actors will shave off their beards at an upcoming charity event.
