New research shows Irish people really love their pets

While temperament was the main concern for 80% of owners when choosing a pet, almost two thirds (67%) said it was important that the cat or dog fitted in with the family.

The research, published by Purina, found that the main benefits of having a pet is fun (74%), love and affection (70%), and companionship (69%).

More than four out of 10 owners said their dog or cat helped to relieve stress. One in four dog owners said their pet was a great way to meet people when out and about.

Most owners (66%) allowed their dog or cat to sleep indoors, while almost a quarter (23%) allowed their pets to sleep in their bedroom.

And it appears that pet owners are still happy to pamper their pets even if the household budget is tight.

One in four (26%) had their cat or dog professionally groomed in the past year, while more than half (52%) had bought their pet a gift.

Two out of five owners have shared images or a video of their dog or cat on social media.

And, when it comes to holidays, one in 10 bring their pet along too.

DSPCA education officer, Gillian Bird, offers the following six top tips for responsible pet ownership:

- Microchip your cat/dog — it give them the best chance of being returned if they are lost or stolen;

- Make sure you keep the details up to date — the microchip is only as good as the information stored on the database;

- Ensure your pet’s food is appropriate to their age;

- Exercise and play with your cat or dog regularly; nTrain your pet;

- Pets need to have regular vet check ups and neutering, as well as providing peace of mind, can prevent serious health problems and certain behavioural issues.
