Local authority outlines strategy for abolition of 12 councils

The 12 town councils in the county will be officially abolished on June 1.

Suppliers of goods and service will have to invoice bills to the town councils on the previous day.

A spokesman said local authority tenants, in the short-term, can continue to make cash payments at former town council offices.

Council officials will then write to each tenant informing them of future payment options and how requests for housing maintenance will be made.

Meanwhile, the county council will take over all applications for those seeking local authority housing.

Application forms for social housing will still be available at former town council offices but, on completion, will have to be submitted to either of three county council divisional headquarters.

People living in the Southern Division area will have to contact the housing department at County Hall; in the Northern Division, applications will have to be sent to Annabella House, Mallow, while the county council’s offices at Kent St, Clonakilty will be responsible for processing all of the Western Division.

Businesses will be invoiced for the entirety of this year by town councils and commercial rates will be due at former town council offices.

However, from 2015, all rates will be administered by the county council and collected at their offices.

All planning applications and decisions will, from June 1, be transferred to the county council.

After that date, all applications will have to be sent to either the planning department, County Hall or to Norton House, Skibbereen

Anyone wishing to view planning applications may do so at town council offices until June 30 but, after that date, viewing will be available only to County Hall or Norton House. All applications and scanned document will also be online.
