Garda to go ahead with private PAC hearing

A Garda whistleblower will proceed with today’s private hearing before the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to discuss his allegations that millions of euro of State money is being lost through the cancellation of penalty points.

His boss, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan, yesterday withdrew his threat of legal action to block the hearing, saying doing so would not have been in the public interest.

“Despite my reservations, I believe that, in all circumstances, it would not be in the public interest for An Garda Síochána to pursue the question of legal proceedings against an Oireachtas Committee,” he said.
