With antibiotic resistance on the rise, honey, silver and maggots are making a comeback for the treatment of wounds as doctors strive to find alternatives.

Professor Zena Moore, head of the RCSI School of Nursing and Midwifery, said health professionals are increasing “looking back to go forward” in the face of growing antibiotic resistance and at a time of spiralling costs in wound care.

“Twenty-five to 50% of Irish hospital beds are occupied by wound patients, with the cost of one problematic wound being between €6,500 and €10,000.
