A Garda whistleblower at the centre of the growing penalty points controversy will appeal to members of the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee today to allow him to proceed to give evidence to it on Thursday.

However, he wrote to the clerk of the committee last night saying that having had legal advice he wants to appear in private. He said the PAC “should hear and ought to hear” about what he alleges is the loss of revenue amounting to millions. He will write to the PAC members today.

The committee is under increasing pressure to call off its probe into the issue after Justice Minister Alan Shatter referred the matter to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.
