Leaving Certificate students who want to become primary teachers are likely to need much higher standards of maths, under proposals being finalised by the profession’s regulatory body.

The Teaching Council is carrying out research on issues around entry requirements for degrees to become a teacher at primary or second level, before making final advice to Education Minister Ruairi Quinn.

However, it proposed a threshold of higher level maths or an ordinary level A1 for entry to primary teacher-training in a discussion document on entry requirements last year.
