We’re accustomed to bonfires and crowds for returning sporting heroes but a town rolling out a welcoming committee for a couple of barrels of whiskey has to be a first.

To be fair to the good folk of Dungourney, Co Cork, it was a big day in their whiskey history with the arrival of the first barrels of brown liquor to their new warehousing facility.

And while Ramblin’ Jack Elliot might have lamented the lack of cigarettes and wild, wild women, there were at least a few pipers piping the whiskey’s arrival as part of a Distilling Welcoming Committee, while locals turned out in large numbers to partake in the welcome party.
