Victim ‘wants world to know uncle is a child molester’

A Carlow woman who was molested by her uncle as a child has waived her right to anonymity so “the world can know he is a child abuser”.

Victim ‘wants world to know uncle is a child molester’

Deirdre Curtis, 30, who was first abused by Eamonn McCall, aged 40, when she was seven, told the Central Criminal Court she was not waiving her right for the fame and that she understood this would make life difficult for her family.

McCall, a former US Marine who now lives on North Circular Rd in Dublin 7, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting Ms Curtis and attempting to rape her in her family home in Pollerton, Carlow Town, on dates between April 1990 and Jan 1995.

The reformed heroin addict, who has a previous conviction for theft, was remanded in custody for sentence on Monday.

Ms Curtis took the stand to read out her victim impact report.

She said McCall had robbed her of her right to live in her home town because she can only bear to spend a few nights there, acknowledging that, if it were not for her parents, she would never go back.

“I still feel so angry,” said Ms Curtis. “I hate him. He is a cancer in the world. I wish he would do everyone a favour and go away and die. He has shown no remorse, no contrition.”

She said she often thought if she had locked her bedroom door in Dec 1994, the night of the attempted rape, McCall would not have been able to get her for “that last time”.

“My aunt and uncle were in my room that night and I thought I was safe but he still came for me and hurt me in the most awful and depraved way,” Ms Curtis said.

“I am not normal. I am a survivor and I survive every day.”

She concluded by saying she was waiving her right to anonymity as she wanted the world to know McCall was a child abuser.
