The town council is owed nearly €370,000, according to applications which came before the district court yesterday in respect of sums due in rates.

The individual sums range from more than €2,000 to over €92,000 which are owed to the town, council according to papers lodged in court by Killarney Town Council.

Most but not all of the businesses are in the town centre and several establishments owe more than €10,000.

Some four businesses owe more than €20,000, according to the summonses.

More than 20 applications were before the district court in Killarney, a small number of which were adjourned from late 2012.

As well as a small number of restaurants, the businesses include small industries and retail units, along with a bar.

Each had been served with six days’ notice, the court was told.

Several applications were adjourned and decrees granted in a small number.

Padraig O’Connell, representing a number of the businesses, indicated he would be challenging “the composition of the rate”.

One of his clients with a bill for €13,083 in rates due had suffered a burglary, he added.
