The Taoiseach has rejected calls to reverse the budget decision to remove 35,000 medical cards from people over 70.

Enda Kenny said changes to the health budget next year were designed “to protect services for those who need them — children, the sick, and the elderly people”.

Speaking in the Dáil after thousands of older people had gathered outside to protest against a range of budget cuts, Mr Kenny said at least 93% of people over 70 will have a free GP card.
