Girl left with fear of showers

A 17-year-old schoolgirl who developed “an inherent fear of showers” following a fire in her home has been awarded €22,500 damages in the Circuit Civil Court.

Girl left with fear of showers

Barrister Timothy Sheehan told the court that in Nov 2009, Nadia McDonagh was having a shower in her home at St Finian’s Avenue, Lucan, Co Dublin, when the Triton electric shower exploded and burst into flames.

He said the then 13-year-old girl had run from the house into the garden, taking her young brother with her.

Judge Matthew Deery heard she had suffered acute distress and suffered from nightmares.

A consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist considered her to have suffered anxiety symptoms to an extent that met the criteria for a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Mr Sheehan said Ms McDonald had fully recovered from the effects of the incident.

She was an ambitious young woman and was now finalising her secondary school studies and was determined to obtain sufficient points to enable her to go to university.

He said the defendants, British-based Norcross Group Holdings Limited and Earthridge International Limited, Maynooth, Co Kildare, had made her a settlement offer of €22,500 which he was recommending to the court.

Judge Deery approved the offer.
