There will be an “exodus” of experienced officers after tax changes to pension lump sums kick in next January, middle-ranking gardaí have warned.

The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) said there was “no doubt” the strength of the force will fall below the 13,000 minimum floor set by Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan.

However, Justice Minister Alan Shatter was adamant its strength would be maintained at 13,000, due to a decision to restart recruitment next year.
