By Gosch, Maud’s gone from she to he as story has the purrfect ending

It’s a case of “Maud gone” for this stowaway kitten whose remarkable survival story has come to a purrfect ending.

The feisty feline hit the headlines last week when she survived a 260km road trip from Dublin to Cork stuck in a car engine.

But as Maud has been adopted and was poised to head for her new home, it emerged that she is actually a he.

However, his new owner, Fine Gael Cllr Patricia Gosch, a self-confessed cat lover, has decided to keep the name given his remarkable adventure.

“I’ve never had a male pet before. I arrived down at the CSPCA to collect Maud yesterday and was really shocked to discover she’s a he,” she said.

“But when they opened his cage, he just jumped out and started licking my face. He’s just handsome altogether. He’ll be the king of the castle.”

Ms Gosch read about Maud’s adventure in the Irish Examiner last week and said it was love at first sight.

Maud was discovered cowering under the bonnet of a hire car after three German tourists had driven from Dublin to Cork.

Svenja Dabbert said she and her travelling companions, Anna Scheffler and her boyfriend Ronald Brix, had heard strange noises coming from under the bonnet but thought nothing of it.

They heard the strange noise again when they stopped at the Rock at Cashel but couldn’t find the source, and carried on.

It was only when they arrived at a B&B in Douglas that evening that they realised the purring sound from the engine was in fact a cat.

They found what they thought was a terrified female kitten wedged between the engine block and one of the front wheels.

They named her Maud after the owner of the B&B and dropped her off at the CSPCA where she underwent a full health check and was vaccinated.

But ISPCA staff quickly realised Maud was a male.

Ms Gosch, whose father was German, and whose pet cat of 18 years, Sooty, died recently, said she is delighted to give Maud a loving home.

But he’ll have to make do with a pink cat basket.

“This cat was meant for us. He’s just a beauty,” said Ms Gosch.
