Two gardaí hospitalised after attack

The two officers, based at Gurranabraher Garda Station, were responding to a domestic incident in Blarney St at 8.15pm when they were attacked by a man in his 30s.

During the ensuing struggle, one officer suffered head and neck injuries. His colleague sustained injuries to his hand. They were treated at Mercy University Hospital.

The attacker, who is a foreign national, was in an extremely agitated state, according to a Garda spokesman.

The two officers managed to break free from the attack and call for back up.

Colleagues from the Armed Regional Support Unit and the dog unit rushed to the scene.

Gardaí then had to use force and pepper spray to try to get the attacker under control. He was subdued and arrested before being taken to Gurranabraher station.

A man is due before Cork District Court this morning charged in relation to the incident.
