Inquest into man’s death after pub row adjourned

Sgt Fergus Twomey applied at Cork City Coroner’s Court yesterday for an adjournment of the inquest into Pat Deasy’s death until the criminal proceedings, due to be heard at the October sessions of Cork Circuit Criminal Court, have concluded.

Mr Deasy, aged 57, of McGrath Park, Blackrock, Cork, died at Cork University Hospital on Sept 24 last just over 24 hours after being critically injured during a row outside a pub in Mahon.

Mr Deasy, a former Cork City Council employee, was socialising at the Red Cove Inn on the previous Friday night when a row flared between 12.30am and 1am on the Saturday.

He received a serious head injury when he was struck and fell to the ground.

On May 31 last, gardaí arrested Luke O’Sullivan, aged 25, of 23 Inchera Lawn, Mahon, Cork, and charged him with the unlawful killing of Mr Deasy on Sept 22, 2012, at Avenue de Rennes, Mahon, Cork, contrary to common law.

Mr O’Sullivan made no reply when charged and has been remanded on strict bail conditions since.

Cork city coroner Dr Myra Cullinane agreed to adjourn the inquest until the criminal proceedings have concluded.
