Woman used false passport in asylum bid

As the woman pleaded guilty to the offence, her solicitor, Graham Hyde, told Cork District Court it was a common misconception by some in the immigration process that they would give themselves some advantage, in the waiting time, if they used a passport other than their own.

“In my experience, it is a common occurrence; they feel that by presenting a false document they will get through the system more advantageously,” he said.

Chipo Danburka, 27, of the Kinsale Rd asylum centre, pleaded guilty to two charges related to the presentation of a counterfeit passport at Anglesea St Garda station.

Insp Bill Duane said the defendant presented the false passport to an immigration registration officer at the station on Dec 13 last.

Judge Leo Malone fined Danburka €350 on one charge and took a related charge into consideration.

Mr Hyde said the defendant was concerned about the impact of the conviction on her application to become an Irish citizen.
