A Cork drug dealer serving a 16-year sentence for the biggest seizure of ecstasy in the State has died from a suspected overdose in prison.

Colum Carroll, aged 40, of Saint Joseph’s View, Riverside, Glanmire, was caught with 480,000 MDMA tablets worth €4.8m in Jan 2004.

He was initially given a combined sentence of 24 years, one of the biggest terms handed down for drug-dealing, for that offence and a separate seizure. The sentence was reduced to 16 years on appeal.
