Woman, 75, latest victim of burglars

Cash and a large amount of jewellery were taken from the home of a 75-year-old woman in Listowel, the latest in a series of burglaries in north Kerry.

The break-in at the woman’s house, in Clieveragh, a residential area of Listowel, is believed by local gardaí to have been committed between 2.20pm and 3.40pm, on Sunday afternoon.

The back door of the house and a window had been forced open and a safe, which had been in a press in the kitchen, was stolen.

The safe contained €2,000 in cash, €30,000 in savings certificates, a large amount of jewellery and the woman’s passport. The woman discovered the break-in on returning to her home.

Gardaí have reports of two men acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the crime and are trying to trace a white Citroen Berlingo van with a 01-C registration, which was captured on CCTV.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 068-21000 Two other recent burglaries in the area are also being investigated.

In the early hours of Tuesday, Jul 16, a small amount of cash and a charity collection box were taken in a break-in at Scribes Café, Church St, Listowel.

Gardaí are hoping a recently installed CCTV system at the café may help them identify the culprits.

Also being probed is a break-in at a private house at Ballyeigh, Ballybunion, in which some personal goods were stolen, early on Sunday, Jul 14.
