Work to begin to repair landslide damage on coast road

Cork County Council has announced that work will commence in the next few weeks to repair a collapsed section of coastal road.

Work to begin to repair landslide damage on coast road

A landslide occurred just over a year ago at the Lighthouse Rd, on the approach to Youghal town centre.

The council carried out emergency stabilisation works last summer, but has been waiting to get the road and footpath permanently repaired.

A spokesman said the council was now able to proceed with permanent repair works on the section of the coastal road, which it estimates will take about four months to complete.

This will allow reopening of the road to two-way traffic. The footpath and parapet wall will also be reinstated. The spokesman said the R634 is regarded as a critical part of Youghal’s infrastructure and is the main western entry route for traffic into the town centre.

“The reopening of the road to two-way traffic will provide much-improved traffic flow at the location,” the spokesman said.

With temporary works having been in place since May 2012, outgoing county mayor Barbara Murray welcomed the scheme.

“While the works will take place during the summer season, at this stage all that matters is that the work is being done and that the traffic lights that have been in place since last year will finally be removed,” said the Youghal-based councillor.

“Hopefully, there will be no substantial additional works coming to the surface when the contract commences and that these works will finally stabilise the area from further erosion”.

The project is being financed by a regional road Specific Improvement Grant provided by the Department of Transport& and managed by Cork County Council’s non-national roads office with the services of JODA Engineering Consultants.

The construction works will be carried out by Cumnor Construction.
