Quinn settles unfair dismissal case
Brenda Quinn, 26, initiated the case after her experience with the new management of Quinn Insurance, which had been placed in administration in Mar 2010.
The case was listed for hearing before a sitting of the Employment Appeals Tribunal in Dublin yesterday.
However, following over two hours of talks, the tribunal was informed that the case had been settled and the claim for unfair dismissal could be withdrawn.
Tribunal chairman, Joe Revington, welcomed the settlement, noting it was a difficult case that would have taken a considerable length of time to hear. He congratulated both parties and said it allowed people “to get on with their lives without looking over their shoulder at this problem”.
Speaking later, Ms Quinn said she was happy with the outcome but was prevented from discussing the detail of any settlement under its terms. “I’m delighted that it’s finished with and over,” said Ms Quinn, who was accompanied by her sister, Aoife, and brother-in-law, Niall McPartland.
It is understood that among the grounds of her claim for unfair dismissal was victimisation in the workplace.
Ms Quinn, who works as an accounts assistant at a building firm in Warrenpoint, Co Down, on a salary of £20,000 (€23,347) a year, was previously owner of the Slieve Russell Hotel in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan.
Earlier this month, her brother, Seán Quinn jr, began a case for unfair dismissal against Quinn Insurance after claiming he was forced to accept redundancy from his €75,000 post. That case is to continue in July.
