Grants on offer to protect city’s historic buildings

Two separate grant schemes have been launched to help tackle dereliction in the historic spine of Cork City.

Grants on offer to protect city’s historic buildings

The city council has invited building owners and occupiers along the north-south spine, which extends from Barrack St to Blackpool Church, to apply for grants under its Architectural Conservation Area (ACA) grant scheme and its Cork City Painting grant scheme. The area includes several buildings of significance, including many building types and features unique to Cork, such as the “Dutch-Billy” gabled houses and examples of Cork’s bay-fronted buildings in Shandon.

Lord Mayor John Buttimer said he hoped for a good response. “The council is delighted to be offering two grant schemes in these difficult times and I would hope that building owners in the area will seize the day and invest in their buildings and help make Cork’s city centre a place that citizens can both enjoy and be proud of,” he said.
