Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin wants the Government to recognise that fodder shortages have reached national emergency status, and to introduce measures to relieve pressure on farmers.

At a meeting yesterday in Boherbue Co-Op, Co Cork, dairy farmers sought Mr Martin’s help in getting subsidies for the transport of feed, a fund for imported fodder and a cattle cull to ensure the remainder had sufficient feed.

One 70-cow farmer said he is down €21,000 over the past 70 days alone. His fodder costs have spiralled. Ration is 25% dearer, and his usage is up 50%, while his milk output has halved. Thus, he has no income to pay his mounting debts.
