Local hacks set for headline display in charity GAA clash
Mr Buttimer, who is undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, hopes the clash between the skilled hacks and a hopeful Bishopstown GAA club selection will raise much-needed cash for the Cork ARC Cancer Support House.
“Cork ARC provides a magnificent range of holistic services which greatly improve the quality of life of the cancer patient, while at the same time developing awareness and understanding of cancer in the broader community,” said Mr Buttimer.
The game on Apr 26 will be refereed by GAA legend, Seán Óg Ó hAilpín.
The media team includes John McHale (Evening Echo), Denis Hurley (Irish Examiner), Rory O’Hagan (RedFM), Finbarr McCarthy (96FM and C103), Louise Cashell (Cork Independent) and Jonathan Healy (Newstalk).
Their victory will be masterminded from the sidelines by renowned Cork footballers Bríd Stack and Noel O’Leary.
The Bishopstown side, led by Paul Montgomery, includes former Bórd Gáis boss, John Mullins of Augmentis, rumoured to be struggling with a hamstring injury, Tony Daly of Pfizer, and other club members.
Rory Noonan, chief sub-editor of the Evening Echo, is a member of the match organising committee, and he said the Cork media wanted to show their support for the mayor during his battle with cancer and, at the same time, raise much-needed funds for Cork ARC.
As well as post-match analysis of the media side’s comprehensive win, there will be a live question- and-answer session with Cork hurling selector Johnny Crowley, and Cork camogie captain Anna Geary afterwards in the club house.
Throw-in for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Match at Bishopstown GAA club is at 7.30pm on Friday, Apr 26, and all are welcome.
