Councils net €100m in parking fees, fines

Local authorities are taking in around €100m each year from Irish motorists in parking fees and fines, but are under considerable pressure to maintain such funding levels.

Figures compiled by the Department of the Environment show that the country’s 88 local authorities, including town and borough councils, collected €96.2m in parking revenue in 2010 — the latest year for which audited figures are available.

They also highlight how local authorities are facing difficulties in maintaining past levels of such a valuable source of revenue.
